Guidelines

Training that may be required for CSB/SJU Employees. (NOT AN ALL LIST) Each topic has a description of how to determine if an employee needs training on that subject. This guide is subject to change based on regulation, but should assist departments in identifying most individuals requiring training.  The guide will be updated to reflect changes in regulatory requirements.

All employees must be provided general and specific training on hazards in their workplace.  Supervisors have certain responsibilities for the health and safety of the employees that they supervise.  Supervisors should  apprise themselves with information and training requirements and deliver worksite specific safety component necessary to prevent Injury and Illness on the job.

When first hired, when a new hazard is introduced in the workplace, and when there is a change in job assignment.

  • Procedure for reporting injuries and near misses.

Fire Safety

Are employees expected to use a fire extinguisher if a fire starts? Do employees use heat/spark generating appliances or work in areas were flammable materials elevate the risk of fire?
 

When first hired, when a new hazard is introduced in the workplace, and when there is a change in job assignment.  Fire extinguisher training should occur annually for areas with elevated fire risk e.g labs, shops, food services and custodial services

  • Emergency and evacuation procedures.
  • Good housekeeping practices (e.g., extension cords, storage, etc.).
  • Principles of fire extinguisher use and incipient stage fire fighting hazards.

Ergonomics

Do employees work at seated desk jobs for extended periods? Do they work at jobs that require using one set of muscles, repeating the same task, or using forceful movements in awkward posture (e.g., extensive typing, vibrating or single hand tools)?

Respirators

Are employees exposed to levels of hazardous materials (dust, fumes, mists, vapors, gases) that cannot be reduced with engineering controls and require the use of a respirator? Do they need emergency protection against occasional and/or relatively brief exposure?

When first hired and annually thereafter.

Lockout/ Tagout Procedures

Do employees maintain, service, or operate electrical or mechanical equipment that could cause severe injury with uncontrolled energy release?  To they apply tags and/or locks to control electrical or non-electrical energy sources while performing their job functions?

Noise Protection

Do employees experience high noise levels, equal to or exceeding an 8 hour time-weighted average exposure of 85 dBA (is a raised voice necessary for normal conversation)?  Are employees concerned about a noisy environment or hearing loss?
