Ministerial Resident for Faith-Sharing Communities – SJU Campus Ministry and Collegeville Institute
Position Description:
The Ministerial Resident for Faith-Sharing Communities is a member of the SJU Campus Ministry team who collaborates closely with both the Campus Ministry and Collegeville Institute staffs to develop opportunities for small faith-sharing communities on campus. The goal of this residency is to help students, particularly undergraduate men, grow in awareness of their individual and communal callings. The Ministerial Resident for Faith-Sharing Communities will spend time each week on the following activities: researching and developing programs, ministering to students, attending to Campus Ministry staff responsibilities, and focusing on their own formation. This person will be supervised by the Director of SJU Campus Ministry and receive mentorship from the Collegeville Institute Seminars Program Associate.
Responsibilities:
* Assist with designing a four-year curriculum for Johnnie Brothers, a weekly small group opportunity for Johnnies to share a meal and conversation around big life questions like: Who am I? How did I get here? Who are the important people in my life? Who am I called to be? What is God’s role in my life?
* Assist with creating an ecumenical Benedictine bible study, another weekly small group opportunity for Johnnies that explores Scripture from a Benedictine lens and considers how Scripture can lead us into deeper understandings of God and God’s callings for our lives.
* Draw on the work of the Collegeville Institute Seminars to consider calling language that works for young adults (e.g. vocation, purpose, big life questions, etc.). Develop a program initiative related to these findings.
* Assist with the content of “4th Quarter Retreat” for Johnnies that invites them to reflect on their college experience and how God might be calling them in the next chapter of their lives.
* Assist with evaluation of the small group initiatives.
* Collaborate with other departments in Campus Ministry (i.e. retreats, social outreach, faith formation and liturgy) to integrate concepts of call and vocation into their respective ministries.
* Attend weekly Campus Ministry staff meetings and hold regular office hours.
* Assist with campus-wide Campus Ministry events, Sunday student Masses, and other major liturgies
Ministerial Residents are also required to participate in the School of Theology formation program. This includes developing learning goals, theological reflections, and individual and group spiritual companioning. In addition to SOT formation, the Ministerial Resident meets bi-weekly with the Director of Campus Ministry and Program Associate as part of ongoing formation and assessment.
Minimum Qualifications:
This Ministerial Resident position is intended to provide an opportunity for 2+ years of ministry immersion for a person who is:
a. a professed member of Saint Benedict’s Monastery or Saint John’s Abbey who has either completed or is pursuing a graduate program of theological/pastoral studies; and/or,
b. a student who is enrolled in the Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary and is making progress toward completion of a program of graduate theological/pastoral studies.
Knowledge / Abilities / Skills:
The ideal candidate for this ministerial residency:
* Has a deep reverence and respect for the Catholic, Benedictine tradition of Saint John’s University and Saint John’s Abbey
* Maintains active membership or regular participation in a parish/faith community
* Is creative, motivated, compassionate, reliable and organized
* A good listener and effective communicator
* Has some experience with participating in or leading faith-sharing communities
* Has some understanding of young adult men and their particular spiritual or developmental needs
* Able to commit to 2-3 years of residency, based on his/her particular degree program
Criteria for Award Distribution:
* Selection of award recipients is based on the strength of the assistantship application and the formal interview. Award recipients receive a work award based off of 20 hours a week at $10 an hour and an allowance of $3,200 per academic year for room and board
* The work award is earned on an hourly basis and the room & board allowance is a monthly stipend; both are processed through student payroll with options for payments to be deposited into a personal bank account or applied to the student's account.
* Award packages can be renewed for up to three years pending satisfactory progress toward completion of the degree requirements and enrollment in consecutive academic terms of full-time study.
* Appointments are up to 20 hours per week, August - May.
