November 7, 2024 • 2 min read

We are thrilled to celebrate Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary alumnus Bishop Matthew Zhen Xuebin on his recent appointment as the Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Beijing.

Bishop Zhen’s journey to Saint John’s began in 1993 through the China Educators & Formators Project sponsored by Maryknoll. During his time with Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary, he earned a Master of Divinity (MDiv) in 1997, building on a foundation of faith and search for knowledge that has shaped his remarkable path in the Church.

His episcopal installation took place on October 4, 2023, at Beijing’s Church of the Saviour. This appointment comes as the Vatican and Chinese officials extended their diplomatic agreement on bishop appointments for an unprecedented four years, reinforcing collaboration between Beijing and the Vatican as they work to strengthen the Church’s presence across China.

Bishop Zhen is the third SOT/Sem graduate to be installed as a Bishop in China and the first to serve Beijing, brings a vital new era of leadership to the nation’s capital, home to approximately 100,000 Catholics. From 1998-2007 he served as vice rector of the Beijing Seminary. Prior to his episcopal appointment, Bishop Zehn served as Chancellor of the diocese in Beijing.

The School of Theology and Seminary is immensely proud of Bishop Zhen and the values he exemplifies, rooted in our shared vision for the global Church. We extend our heartfelt congratulations and prayers as he embarks on this inspiring new chapter of service.
