Native Plants used in Oak Savanna Restoration

Most of the planting in the oak savanna was done by machine.  Saint John’s Abbey worked with  Minnesota Native Landscapes, L.L.C. (MNL) for consultation and the planting of the oak savanna.

Arboretum staff, student employees and volunteers prepared the site in winter and early spring 2002, prior to the planting.  This included the removal of non-native brush and trees, followed by controlled burns.

Once the burns were completed, MNL prepared the soil for seeding. MNL seeded the site with a Truax drill seeder. Employees and volunteers followed-up by manually seeding the area around the trees that were missed by the seeder.

Some plants are harder to start from seed so to ensure the survival of these plants, we purchased mature plants from Prairie Restorations, Inc.
