Rev. Safiyah Fosua, an author and Methodist minister, will lead the 2011 Women's Spirituality Conference Feb. 12 at the College of Saint Benedict (CSB), St. Joseph.

The conference, "Open Our Horizons," will take place in the Alumnae Hall, Haehn Campus Center.

The conference begins at 8:30 a.m. with a gathering reception. Fosua delivers the keynote address at 9:15 a.m. and there will be a question and answer session at 11 a.m. A workshop at 1:15 p.m., Visions of Possibilities: Dynamics of Change, highlights the afternoon session.

Fosua will discuss how living one's vocation can be living in service through God to others, and the role of women in church and society. She will explore how women can work past societal stereotypes, practice their beliefs, and despite the challenges, respond to our primary call from God. Women will explore options from which they can be nurtured by family, friends and society, and, in turn, nurture others.

Born in Kansas City, Kan., and raised in Oklahoma, Fosua has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., a Master of Divinity degree from Oral Roberts Seminary, Tulsa, Okla., and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio.

Fosua is currently the director of Invitational Preaching Ministries at United Methodist General Board of Discipleship, Nashville, Tenn., and a clergy member of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference, Methodist Church.

She has authored numerous articles and several books, including Mother Wit: 365 Meditations for African-American Women (1996, Abingdon Press) and Jesus and Prayer (2002, Abingdon Press).

There is no cost to attend, however, free will donations are encouraged. All are welcome, but space is limited. For more information or to register, go to www.csbsju.edu/journey or call 320-363-5939.

Fosua will also speak to several College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University theology classes on Friday, Feb. 11.

The conference is sponsored by Companions on a Journey at CSB. Companions on a Journey seeks to create and sustain environments which offer all members and friends of the CSB community opportunities for reflection on crafting a meaningful life by seeking wisdom and serving church and society.
