New SJU Board of Trustees members named

Saint John’s University recently named Steve Cummings, Philip Galanis, the Rev. Bradley Jenniges, OSB, Thomas Nicol and Joyce Schlough to its Board of Trustees. SJU trustees serve three-year terms and are eligible to serve three consecutive terms.

Mike Urbanos was named the alumni trustee, Bob Hesse the faculty trustee and Ramond Mitchell the student trustee. The alumni representative and faculty representative serve two-year terms, and the student representative serves a one-year term.

All eight began their terms July 1. The board consists of 34 members.

Cummings is a 1983 graduate of SJU. He co-founded Nova Consulting Group in 1987, and the Chaska, Minnesota, based company has become one of the largest and most well respected firms in the environmental engineering industry. Cummings currently serves as president of the company. His son, John, is a rising sophomore at SJU, and daughters Colleen and Bridget graduated from the College of Saint Benedict in 2012 and 2015, respectively.

 

Galanis is a 1975 graduate of SJU. Since 1998, he has been a managing partner in HLB Galanis and Company, Nassau, Bahamas. Earlier this year, he was appointed to be the Bahamas' lead negotiator for the World Trade Organization. He served as a senator in the Parliament of the Bahamas from 2002-07 and 1992-97, and was a member of Parliament, Englerston constituency, from 1997-2002.

Jenniges has served as associate pastor at the parishes of Seven Dolors in Albany, Minnesota, and St. Anthony, Minnesota, since July 1, 2014. He is also chaplain at Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany. Jenniges professed vows in 1992, and has a master of divinity degree from the School of Theology at SJU in 2014. He previously served as assistant treasurer and on the board of directors for the Order of Saint Benedict.

Nicol is a 1991 graduate of SJU and is returning to the board as a trustee. He served as a student trustee in 1990-91 and an alumni trustee from 2010-15. He is the managing partner of Excelsior Benefits, LLC, a regional wholesale benefits brokerage with 14 offices in the U.S. Prior to joining Excelsior, he was a regional vice president of sales with the Principal Financial Group. He is active in Rotary and serves as a board member of the Central Region, UnitedHealthcare Children's Foundation.

Schlough is retired from Park Industries, St. Cloud, Minnesota. She and her husband, Tom SJU '64, established the Thomas and Joyce Schlough Family Scholarship Fund at CSB, and they received the President's Medal from CSB in 2009. Joyce Schlough serves on the Board of Directors of United Way of Central Minnesota and the Central Minnesota Community Fund.

Urbanos is a 1972 graduate of SJU and is the general counsel and secretary of Space Center, Inc., an industrial real estate company that owns and operates over 18 million square feet of properties in the major distribution cities in the U.S. He is on the SJU National Alumni Board and serves on the advisory board for the Donald McNeely Center for Entrepreneurship at SJU. Urbanos is also treasurer of the Minneapolis Rotary Foundation.

Hesse, a 1991 graduate of SJU, is an associate professor and chair of the mathematics department at CSB and SJU. His bachelor's degree is in mathematics, and he has a doctorate from the University of Minnesota. He taught at Hillsdale (Michigan) College for four years before returning to teach at CSB and SJU. His research interests include dynamical systems, mathematical modeling and numerical analysis.

 

Mitchell is a rising junior majoring in theology from Nassau, Bahamas. He has been involved with the Saint John's Senate since his first year on campus. Mitchell served as the student representative on the trustees' Buildings and Grounds Committee. He sings with the SJU Men's Chorus and the CSB and SJU Choral Arts Ensemble, and is co-chair of the Cultural Affairs Board.
