SJU receives award from Minnesota Rehabilitation Association

Saint John’s University received an award from the Minnesota Rehabilitation Association, Job Placement Division (MRAJPD) as the “Large Non-Metro Employer of the Year 2007” during a banquet Oct. 18 at the St. Cloud Holiday Inn.

The SJU dining service was recognized for providing meaningful employment to persons with disabilities.

Fifteen persons with disabilities currently work at the dining service. Most are members of the WACOSA program, which provides Day Training and Habilitation and Extended Employment services to over 400 people with disabilities through six programs in St. Cloud, Waite Park and Sauk Centre. Their employment continues a 15-year tradition of Saint John’s hiring persons with disabilities in the dining service.

WACOSA nominated Saint John’s for the award for employers with over 100 persons. The winner was then selected by a state-wide group.

The MRAJD, whose membership includes professionals who are concerned with the employment of persons with disabilities, recognizes exceptional employers and placement specialists annually who are highly notable in working with persons of disabilities. The nominated are expected to demonstrate exemplary qualities including active recruitment, commitment to making necessary accommodations, open communication and feedback, and proactive and creative approaches to job retention.

The award banquet was held during the MRA/Great Plains Regional Conference Oct. 17-19 at the Holiday Inn.
