Student Reflections

Will Canfield: "As a business major, the word innovation gets thrown around a bit but it was never more visible than at Mayo Clinic. Our team was a microcosmic example of the intersection of business and scientific innovation. This experience revealed, time and time again, the importance of building a cohesive unit that effectively plans project objectives and milestones. We held each other to a higher standard, with the goal of delivering a final product that was as thorough and impressive as the discovery itself."

Vincent Lai: "The MISP helps me gain experience and knowledge in the patenting and marketing field of pharmaceutical industry, and this experience inspires me to aim for the regulatory or patenting-related profession in the pharmaceutical industry in the future."

Kaci McCoy: "The Mayo Innovation Scholars Program provided the opportunity to explore biology in a new context; we explored not only the biological basis of a new treatment but also how the treatment could be brought to market, making a scientific idea relevant to the masses. By broadening my understanding of how biology fits into the world, I have expanded my potential career interests beyond the lab."

Hannah Nelson: "This program has taught me a lot about working in a team environment and the value of strong communication skills. MISP is designed to have team members balance each other out, so working with three other students who have different strengths and weaknesses for months is a long journey; the end result and the way that all our strengths came together to balance out any weaknesses was really neat to see. Overall, this has been a great experience that has really made me take what I learned in the classroom and apply it to a real world setting before I am in my career, which is not an opportunity many college students are given."
