Matlock Receives Prestigious DES Scholarship

St. Joseph, Minn.- Rebecca L. Matlock, daughter of Gary and Valerie Matlock of Pierz, Minn., is one of 10 students nationwide to be awarded a $1000 scholarship for graduate school from the national Delta Epsilon Sigma (DES) office. Matlock is a senior psychology major at the College of Saint Benedict.

Matlock was inducted into the Omega Chapter of DES in February after a rigorous application process. In order to be eligible to join the Catholic honor society, applicants must have completed at least 50 percent of the credit requirements for their baccalaureate degrees with a distinction of performance and maintain a 3.9 grade point average or higher on a 4.0 scale. The purpose of DES is to recognize outstanding academic accomplishment, dedication to intellectual activity and service to others.

Matlock is one of 10 winners nationwide. To apply for the scholarship, Matlock was required to write an essay, obtain letters of recommendation, send in her transcripts and the scores from her graduate record exam. Matlock plans on attending the University of South Dakota at Vermillion to study psychology in the doctoral program.

The College of Saint Benedict is a private, nationally recognized women's, residential, liberal arts, Catholic Benedictine college of 1,900 students, located in St. Joseph, Minn., joined in a coordinate mission with Saint John's University for men.
