ST. JOSEPH, Minn.- The College of Saint Benedict was the only Minnesota college or university to be named one of "America's 100 Most Wired Colleges" by Yahoo! Internet Life magazine.

The College of Saint Benedict ranked #19 because it offers students a campus network, web access, campus computer lab, computer training courses, online registration, online transcripts and classes with online materials. Fully networked computers are in all of the residence halls for unrestricted student use. Thirty-nine percent of students have homepages, and 35 percent of course work can be turned in via the Internet.

"Were we surprised to make the list? Actually no!," said Jim Koenig, CSB/Saint John's University director of information technology services. "We knew from information we routinely share with our colleagues around the country, from vendors who serve the educational market, and others who tour our campuses that we have the networking infrastructure and hardware/software services that would place us as a leader in applying academic technology."

According to Kathy Lang, director of information technology support services, everyone is baffled by the omission of SJU. "Saint John's has identical facilities and shares the same network infrastructure and support services. In fact, the information submitted to Peterson's was identical for both colleges."

The second annual survey included more than 400 of the nation's top colleges and universities identified by Peterson's Competitive Colleges 1997-1998 to find out which schools provide the most access and exposure to the Internet. CSB finished behind Dartmouth College, #1; MIT, #3; Carnegie Mellon University, #6 and Rhodes College, #14. After CSB, were Yale University, #30; Duke University, #57 and Columbia University, #71. The results were announced in the Yahoo! Internet Life's May issue.
