Bunkyo Gakuin University in Japan celebrated its 100th anniversary on Oct. 23, honoring a century of educational excellence and international collaboration, including a 35-year partnership with the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
Founded by Ishiko Shimada in 1924, BGU was one of the first institutions in Japan dedicated to women’s higher education, marking an early commitment to women’s advancement and leadership.
Representatives from CSB and SJU joined BGU’s leadership at a commemorative event that underscored the institutions’ deep connection and shared commitment to cross-cultural learning.
Since its inception, the partnership with BGU has facilitated study exchanges for more than 2,500 students, involving dozens of faculty and staff and many Minnesota host families. It was established in 1989 through the efforts of David Bennetts, a CSB and SJU professor, and BGU Chancellor Emerita Akiko Shimada, who received the Presidential Medal of Honor from SJU in 2007 for her contributions to international education.
“This partnership, rooted in shared values and a profound respect for each other’s cultures, has allowed generations of students to experience the true power of connection and understanding beyond borders,” said Brian Bruess, president of CSB and SJU. “Our institutions have journeyed together, each experience weaving a stronger, more vibrant fabric of mutual growth and learning.
“It was a privilege to celebrate this milestone, and I look forward to the next chapter of our shared story.”
During its nine-day visit, the CSB and SJU delegation also met with CSB and SJU alums in Tokyo and Hong Kong.
“It was a powerful reminder of the lasting impact and reach of the Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s community,” Bruess said. “Seeing how the values and friendships forged on our campuses continue to shape lives worldwide is inspiring. It was an honor to connect, celebrate achievements and share in the enduring Benedictine spirit that unites us all, no matter where we are in the world.”
