Omar Macias

Biography

Chicano Cellist Omar Macias is an active teacher and performer in the Twin Cities area. He is
currently the Adjunct Professor of Cello at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s
University, as well as finishing his work towards a DMA in Cello Performance at the University
of Minnesota. Omar holds degrees from Saint Olaf College in Northfield, MN and the Frost
School of Music at the University of Miami in Miami, FL where he was an Orchestral Fellow
with the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra. His major teachers include Tanya Remenikova, Ross
Harbaugh, Dr. David Carter, and Peter Howard. He has also received classes from notable
pedagogues Astrid Schween and Nicholas Tzavaras.

Omar has performed with the Symphony of the Americas and extensively with the Miami Lyric
Opera, and has participated in summer festivals such as Bowdoin International Music Festival in
Bowdoin, ME Brevard Music Center in Brevard, NC, and Domaine Forget in Quebec, Canada. An advocate of cross-genre performances, he has also shared the stage with notable artists Marvin Hamlisch, Itzakh Perlman, Arlo Guthrie, Jeff Beal, John Daversa, and Sir James Galway.
