Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I knew I wanted to study abroad to experience a new culture, adventure, and make memories. I perceived this could happen through a CSB+SJU study abroad program. Having the support of CSB+SJU staff was very inviting since they would be present to enhance the experience and to lessen potential nervousness and apprehension. I wanted to be able to adventure and step out of my comfort zone, so I knew it was the right choice. I chose this program because of all the opportunities that came with it. I really wanted a faculty advisor as well as I knew Rome had amazing architecture, food, differences in cities, and beautiful churches.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.
A cultural experience I had was in my food and culture class. This is where we learned about some of the history of Rome and the origin of certain foods. We tried new foods in almost every class and gained knowledge about the origin of each food product. It made a lasting impression because of the care and the requirements for the products and the process of cooking the meal. Their portion sizes are much smaller because they eat dinner late but have many courses over a long time span. During the mealtime, they converse with one another and enjoy each other’s company rather than the American way of hurrying through a meal and not taking quality time investing in relationships. The Italians are true epicures.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
My overall study abroad experience was busy yet so much fun with long lasting memories. I built a lot of new relationships and learned a lot academically. I traveled quite a bit on the weekends whether it was in Italy or another country. There is always something new to be seen or learned.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
One of the biggest benefits of studying abroad for a whole semester is finding a place that you will call home even in just a few months. People and places begin to feel familiar daily. Another benefit is being able to step out of your comfort zone and take a leap of faith by yourself. There are always people who are willing to guide you and help, but it is important to learn how to overcome these new experiences and challenges. Lastly, you can really immerse yourself in the culture and get to know the locals. The longer you are abroad, the more you experience the authenticity of culture.
What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Take the leap of faith and be adventurous! You will never regret studying abroad with all the memories made and being able to learn about new cultures.
