Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I chose to study abroad for the experience. There’s nothing like being in a foreign country and experiencing the culture and way of life. It really opens your eyes and shows you the world outside of the U.S., and that’s such an enriching experience. Additionally, it was easier because of the programs already set up and not having to navigate a foreign country without any help. I decided on Ireland because of my heritage and faith that is present there. Additionally, it was less overwhelming than going to London and more welcoming because it’s a smaller city. For Belgium, it was such a unique opportunity to go to a country and make their own foods. They take pride in the local farms, so it was cool to see the connections versus mass production in America.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.

I remember the first day I joined an Irish volleyball team. I had to take public transportation alone for 45 minutes to this place I hoped existed. Wandering to this unknown gym, I was pretty nervous, but once I was inside that dissipated. The team was comprised of girls from at least 10 different countries but all were welcoming. They invited me right into training and I got to know them fairly quick and had some of the most fun with them. It’s kind of surreal to think about it how all of us came from different cultures but were able to make a pretty good team. To this day, I keep in contact with them and went to visit them this year.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Empathy, for one. When exposed to new surroundings, you have to learn and work with the people there, and through that you are able to connect with them. It can be helpful when foreigners are in America because you have been in a similar situation abroad and can assist them. Second, your perspective broadens. You learn that America is not the only country in the world and other countries have valuable insight and culture. Being able to appreciate that allows you to work and find new ideas. With these two skills alone, you are a highly sought after candidate for jobs. While being abroad, you had to be adaptable and you had to connect with others. Those are very valuable in the job industry.

What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

You won’t regret it. It is literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and you’ll have classmates, professors, and advisors to guide you if you are nervous. It changes your world for the better and makes you a better human personally and professionally.
