Keiran McLoone ’25
Program: Greece Semester
Majors: Global Business Leadership & Communication
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I recall being told study abroad is MUST and got rave reviews from past students. I wanted to push myself and experience a one-of-a-kind opportunity. Personally, Greece seemed like the perfect option. Language wasn’t required, it is an inexpensive location, it has a laidback lifestyle, and a great climate.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.
During our field study trips, we had plenty of interactions with the local small businesses, a majority of them being family owned. The visits to honey farms, olive mills, wineries, distilleries, and a bread museum will forever stay with me. Greeks are so passionate about what they do and really welcomed us into their businesses. We learned about their business operations and sampled nearly everything. The generosity given to us as guests made a lasting impression on me. Not only did I make meaningful connections, but learned about the massive agricultural business sector in Greece.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I have more memories from abroad than I could’ve ever imagined. It was by far the best four months of my life. I’m beyond excited for all future study abroad students because of the impact it has. I acquired new skills and learned a lot about myself and other countries as well. There’s no experience quite like studying abroad and diving into another culture. I was able to do countless things I never thought were possible as a college student. CYA was so extremely helpful and an overall great school. The friendships I made with people from other colleges and CSB+SJU will stick with me. I know I will talk about my study abroad for the foreseeable future.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
Study abroad strengthened my own independence and confidence in myself. I learned how to navigate different transportation methods in various countries. Budgeting is a skill I am still working on, but was highly reinforced during my time in Greece. I was academically challenged taking classes not specific to my majors. The diversity of classes led me to push myself and develop new interests. I never thought I would be able to take a psychology or archaeology class! Professionally, I made plenty of connections with a variety of people. These interactions deepened my communication skills, which I know will be beneficial in my future career. Although I didn’t participate in an internship, there were many opportunities to get involved in local businesses and organizations!
What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
PLEASE DO IT! Your future self will be so thankful. If you can make it work financially and within your schedule, take the step. Check out financing options, apply for scholarships, and reach out to CGE here on campus!
