Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I chose to study abroad because it was something I had hoped to do since I was younger and is one of the main reasons I chose to go to CSB+SJU. London is a place I had always wanted to visit, and it made the most sense for me considering it included an internship option and would help out with my major. I also liked that the London spring semester program was with a group because I got to travel with and get to know other Bennies and Johnnies. Between living in a busy city, exploring the different boroughs, and trying new things, London was the perfect place for my study abroad experience!
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.
During my time abroad, I was able to visit multiple other cities and countries which broadened my horizons and allowed me to experience different cultures. One particular experience that stood out to me was in the class we had with our professor from CSB+SJU. All of us were assigned a different area of London and were given the task to do research, visit the area, and give a walking tour to our peers. I was able to visit so many new places and learn cultural practices that I otherwise wouldn’t have.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
I spent the spring semester in London, and I thought it was the perfect amount of time (although one can never really have enough time to explore London) to get familiar with my surroundings. I felt like I grew so much over the four months and became a lot more confident in myself personally and professionally. As all new things go, it did take time to adjust, but by the end of the program, the city that once felt so big and unfamiliar to me felt like home.
What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
My one piece of advice is that if a study abroad program fits into your schedule, go for it! This experience is a fantastic way to learn more about yourself, others, and the world around you. You’ll make memories and friendships that will last long after your study abroad experience is through.
