Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I wanted to study abroad to broaden my perspective and push myself outside my comfort zone. I specifically chose Spain because I wanted to experience a new culture and expand my Spanish by living with a host family.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.
I was able to dive into the Spanish culture by living with a host family, specifically with my host mom, from whom I learned so much. I attended a barbeque with her family in order to experience more of their culture. I was able to experience the culture by trying new foods and becoming good friends with the owner and servers at Vinería San Telmo. My favorite cultural experience was volunteering with ONCE and being able to chat one-on-one with a local student.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
I benefited so much from studying abroad. I was able to gain more confidence in myself and grow in independence. I was able to broaden my perspective on the world as well.
What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
If I could offer any advice for someone wanting to study abroad, I would just say to take the leap. It is a life-changing, once-in-a-lifetime experience . For Spain specifically, if the language barrier is worrying you, don’t let that stop you from going. There are resources and intercambios (exchanges) that help you pick it up quickly. Especially by living with a host family and having to communicate with them, you’re able to pick it up, and if you don’t, all the host families are great and very understanding of the language barrier.
