Program: Australia Semester

Major: Biology

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I chose to study abroad because I wanted to push myself outside of my comfort zone and live in a new place for a few months! I chose Australia because it isn’t typically a place you can get to easily with the travel and time difference, so it seemed like the right decision. Another contributing factor was definitely the beach and getting to live with people from other schools around the U.S.!

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.

The balanced life that is present in Australia is something that will always stick with me. They do their work, but also take their relaxation and time off just as seriously. Seeing so many people in our town on the weekend for the markets, beach, and just strolling around was always so awesome.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

I think spending a semester abroad can teach you so much about yourself and how you can thrive in new environments. In my personal life, it gave me such a better sense of independence and how to enjoy your time alone and with new people. For academics, I was able to take courses outside my normal curriculum which helped open my eyes to other subjects I hadn’t studied before.

What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

Just go for it. It can be so scary to make the decision to go and then follow through, but it is always worth it. Look into all the programs and find one that works best for you. Your time abroad can teach you so much about yourself and gives you the opportunity to call another place home for a time.
