Why study ESSS at a liberal arts college?

ESSS allows students to apply science to the applicable and evolving world of sport. Through the curriculum, students are exposed to innovative research and hot topic issues in sport that they will not receive in more traditional science courses.

What makes the ESSS minor at CSB/SJU unique?

Unlike many programs, students are allowed to shape their own ESSS curriculum and take classes that they are interested in. Additionally, students can take courses that will be directly applicable to their future career path, such as coaching courses.   

What has your experience with the CSB/SJU ESSS faculty been like?

The faculty in the ESSS department are largely responsible for why it is such great and popular program. Don Fischer, Mary Stenson and Janna LaFountaine are all extremely knowledgeable but more importantly, they are personable and have the ability to make difficult concepts understandable. My ESSS courses have always been the ones I have looked forward to because the faculty make them interesting and interactive.

What has been one of the greatest challenges you have faced? 

Balancing my involvement in athletics, the community, and working while still maintaining my academics has been a challenge in my college career. Time management and support from my peers has been the best way to handle the stress of having a lot on my plate.

What advice do you have for students considering minoring in ESSS? 

Be open to taking courses you did not plan on taking. One of the most important parts of a liberal arts education is developing the whole self. Take advantage of the wide array of classes offered here and learn something that will set you apart in your interviews down the road.

How do you anticipate using your degree after graduation?

I am moving to Portland, Oregon, to pursue a career in product testing with Nike.
