Why study ESSS at a liberal arts college?

A liberal arts college allows me to take a variety of classes and gain knowledge in many different areas outside of my specific area of study. Being a part of the ESSS minor was important to me because I have always been involved in sports and have had a great interest in anything related to exercise. I knew that I could use much of the information I learned in class in my future career as an occupational therapist and a possible coach because the material covered is applicable to many aspects of life.

What makes the ESSS minor at CSB/SJU unique?

The ESSS minor is unique because it provides students with exposure to different sport and exercise concepts that can be used in many areas outside of the classroom. Students are able to take classes that apply most to their intended area of interest while still learning a wide variety of information to develop a solid foundation of knowledge.

What has your experience with the CSB/SJU ESSS faculty been like?

The faculty at CSB/SJU have been amazing to work with. All of the ESSS professors are always passionate and excited about the topics they are teaching, and they present concepts that are interesting and relevant. Additionally, Don Fischer has been a great resource in my journey through the ESSS minor and pre-occupational therapy tract as my advisor. He is always available to answer questions, provide feedback, and give advice about registration and post-graduation plans. Overall, the faculty are incredible!

What has been one of the greatest challenges you have faced?

One of the greatest challenges that I encountered was prioritizing. I have always been one who likes to do it all and be a part of everything, but I continuously had to make a disciplined choice to do what I needed to do before doing what I wanted to do. As a student-athlete on the softball team and someone involved in other extracurricular activities, I sometimes had to make sacrifices to prepare myself in the best way possible for the future.

What advice do you have for students considering minoring in ESSS?

My advice for students considering the ESSS minor would be to plan ahead and take classes that are applicable to what they want to do in their future. This minor is exceptionally fun and interesting, especially if classes are applicable to something that the student wants to pursue in the future.

How do you anticipate using your degree after graduation?

Next year, I will be attending graduate school at the College of Saint Scholastica to pursue a degree in occupational therapy. I will use much of the information I have learned in my ESSS courses to guide me in my further education and help me if I become a coach someday!
