Brita Thielen - CSB, Class of 2011
Graduate Student

I graduated from the College of Saint Bendict in 2011 with a degree in English and Hispanic Studies. During college, I took advantage of many of the opportunities CSB/SJU and the English Department offered, including a work-study position at the Writing Center, co-chairing the Pseudonym literary club, submitting writing to the college's literary magazine Studio 1, interning at the Literary Arts Institute at CSB, and completing a Senior Honors Thesis. After graduation, I spent six months working as a volunteer sixth grade teacher through the Olancho Aid Foundation in Juticalpa, Olancho, Honduras. The experience was extremely rewarding and broadened my understanding of the crucial role education plays in breaking the cycle of poverty - as well as the many challenges of teaching! For approximately two years, I served as the Director of Client Support at In Touch, a company that operates ethics and whistleblower hotlines in Minneapolis, MN. The bulk of my position involved quality checking written transcriptions to ensure that all information is accurately and clearly communicated. I also maintained email and verbal (phone) communication with corporate-level contacts on a daily basis - so the ability to communicate in a clear and professional manner is a must! I have received my MA in English Literature with a Certificate in the Teaching of Writing from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2016. I currently am a doctoral student in English at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. I feel my time at CSB/SJU excellently prepared me for the adventures I have had so far, and the faculty was always willing to go above and beyond to help me succeed.
