Social Studies Education

CSB/SJU students interested in teaching grades 5-12 history, government, economics, geography, psychology, and sociology should pursue a Social Science major and Secondary Education minor.

This licensure program combines coursework in educational foundations and social studies pedagogy with content-focused classes in history and the social sciences. It includes field experiences in middle and high school social studies classrooms, culminating in a 16-week student teaching experience.

Field Experiences

Prior to student teaching, students spend a minimum of 100 hours in grades 5-12 social studies classrooms.

Admission to Social Studies Education

You will apply to be accepted to the Social Studies Education Program during your sophomore year.  Learn about the application process to the department and how to prepare.

Seeking Licensure

In addition to completing all required coursework and field experiences, the Professional Educator Standards and Licensing Board requires all students seeking Social Studies licensure in Minnesota to successfully complete the Secondary History/Social Studies edTPA. This assessment is completed during student teaching. The cost of this assessment to students is $300.
