A Culture of Understanding:  Dialogue at CSB+SJU

A culture of dialogue creates transparency across individual and organizational assumptions that the drive the way we think and communicate about an issue.  A living culture of dialogue in an organization has the power to not only rebuild trust that may be lacking, but also makes creativity and innovation possible in unforeseen ways (Barrett, 2019).

  1. Dialogues Promote Understanding
Dialogues provide a space for constructive exchange among members of a constituency group on matters related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. They help break down barriers, dispel stereotypes, and build bridges of understanding and respect. [2]
  2. Dialogues Involve Active Listening
Effective dialogue involves active listening, where intentional efforts are made to understand and absorb what others are communicating. This process extends beyond spoken words, acknowledging non-verbal cues and emotions behind the message. [1]
  3. Dialogues Develop Cultural Intelligence
Developing cultural intelligence is essential for constructive dialogue with people from diverse backgrounds. It involves learning about other cultures, challenging assumptions, and practicing empathy and open-mindedness. [1]
  4. Dialogues Build Trust
Trust plays a pivotal role in cross-cultural dialogue. Demonstrating respect, openness, and genuine interest in understanding others’ perspectives fosters trust and improves the quality of communication. [1]
