Data Science

Data science is the process of looking at the big picture and bringing it into sharp focus.

“Data science is an interdisciplinary field that uses computer science, mathematics and statistics to extract knowledge and insights from large and unstructured data and apply those insights across a broad range of fields. A data scientist not only understands algorithms but can modify or create new ones to solve the problem at hand.”

–Bob Hesse, associate professor of computer science and mathematics at CSB and SJU

About the Program

The modern concept of data science as a field separate from statistics and computer science is relatively new and exciting as the advance of technology has opened up our ability to extract knowledge from typically large data sets and apply that knowledge across a variety of fields. The data science major at CSB and SJU is designed for students who are interested in learning to apply computational and statistical tools for modeling and simulation as well as knowledge discovery from data across many areas. Students who complete this major can choose careers in business, industry, research or education. They will be able to model and analyze data, build data solutions, discover new knowledge from data and aid in decision making processes. Students will learn to work collaboratively and bring both mathematics and computer science to bear on data-focused problems across varied disciplines.

Discovering Data’s Secrets

When you choose to study data science at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, there’s no telling where that search might take you. As a data scientist you will have access to the answers that drive sociological, political, medical, environmental and market research. Your work can point the way forward.
