Peter Rothstein

Peter Rothstein works as a director of theater, musical theater, opera and new work development. He is the Founding Artistic Director of Theater Latté Da, a Twin Cities-based company dedicated to adventurous music-theater. Since the company’s inception in 1992, Peter has directed 58 main-stage productions, including 10 world premieres and 12 area premieres. In 2012 the company launched NEXT, a major new works initiative committed to playwrights, composers, lyricists the development of new music-theater.

Peter is the creator of All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914, which premiered in a live broadcast on Minnesota Public Radio and has since been broadcast around the globe. In 2017 All Is Calm will complete its tenth national tour, including performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Peter is also the creator of Steerage Song along with musician, storyteller and fellow Johnnie Dan Chouinard. Steerage Song is a docu-musical about the European American immigrant experience between 1845 and 1924 seen through the lens of the current immigration debate. The work includes songs from 20 countries and is performed in 18 different languages.

Peter also works extensively as a freelance director, and extensively with playwrights, composers and lyricists, directing workshops of new plays, musicals and operas. He has helped foster new work in collaboration with Theater Latté Da, the Playwrights’ Center, the National Alliance for Musical Theater, PlayPenn, Minnesota Opera and the Illusion Theatre, where he is an Artistic Associate.

Peter was named Minnesota’s Artist of the Year by the Star Tribune (2015), Best Director of the Year by City Pages (2017, 2010, 2006), Artist of the Year by City Pages (2012), Theater Artist of the Year by Lavender Magazine (2010) and a Community Award from Lavender Magazine (2013). He has received seven Ivey Awards for Overall Excellence, and has been awarded grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Theater Communications Group, the Minnesota State Arts Board and the McKnight Foundation.

Peter has a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and theater from Saint John’s University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in directing from University of Wisconsin – Madison.

Upcoming projects include Ragtime for Seattle's 5th Avenue and Asolo Repertory Theater in Sarasota Florida; the world premiere of Home for the Holidays with Minnesota Orchestra; the area premiere of Fellow Travelers with the Minnesota Opera; Man of La Mancha, Assassins, Underneath the Lintel and the world premiere of Five Points for Theater Latté Da.
