French Studies

Acceptance to Major Requirements

Course Requirements:  FREN 212, 311 (or 315), 312 (or 316); 330, 331 or 332; 323, 341 or 352; 16 credits FREN 300+ (must include 399 Senior Capstone) and may include classes taught in Cannes study abroad (ART 250A taught in French also counts).
Minimum Grade and/or GPA for required courses:  grade of C or better and 2.0 GPA
Minimum Cumulative GPA:  2.00
Other Requirements: Students may take up to four (4) credits in English, with a focus on France or Francophone world, subject to approval by the French Studies Program.  At least half of the credits required for your major, excluding supporting courses, must be in CSB/SJU course work.
Unconditional acceptance to major: At the time of application, the student (1) has earned at least a C (2.00) grade point average for all coursework completed and for all coursework completed in the intended major, including FREN 212 OR 216, and (2) is on track to complete 311 OR 312 by the end of the spring semester of the student’s sophomore year and to enroll in at least one upper-division course in French Studies in the fall of their junior year. 
Conditional acceptance to major: The Languages and Cultures Department Chair may, at their discretion, admit students to the major who do not meet the criteria for unconditional acceptance. Such students may proceed with current registration, but their subsequent continuation in the major will be contingent on meeting expectations stipulated by the Chair.

Major in French Studies (40 credits)

212, 311 or 315, 312 or 316; one literature course from 324 (Fren Film Abroad), 325 (Fren Lit Abroad), 330, 331, 332, or 351; one cultural studies course from 323 (Fren Civ Abroad), 341, or 352; 16 additional 300-level credits including Art 250A (Histoire de l'art) in Cannes ; and 399. All students are urged to study abroad at our French affiliate, the Collège International de Cannes. CSB/SJU Study Abroad Programs fulfill many Common Curriculum as well as major/minor requirements. No more than 4 credits of ILP coursework can be applied towards the French major. Up to four credits taught in English from the list below may be applied to the major.

Major in French/Secondary Education (38 credits)

Same requirements as for the major in French studies.
