CSB SUSTAINABILITY DIRECTOR

Judy

Judy Purman joined CSB in August 2010 as the Director of the Office of Sustainability where she coordinates, develops, and implements strategies for sustainable practices campus-wide through collaboration with students, faculty and staff.  She co-directed a short term study abroad program in Otavalo, Ecudaor for the past three years and serves on the board of the Minnesota Street Market in St. Joseph.  She earned a BA in History from Beloit College and an MS in Horticulture from the University of Maryland-College Park.  She enjoys travel with her family, quilt making, board games and good movies.

CSB SUSTAINABILITY FELLOW

Alex Chocholousek - Sustainability Fellow 2013-14

Alex Chocholousek grew up on a 100+ year-old family farm in south-central South Dakota, where his grandfather and father instilled in him a connection with the land and a concern for the environment. He graduated from Saint John's University in the spring of 2013 with a major in Environmental Studies and a minor in Philosophy. During his time at SJU, Alex was a member of the sustainable living community, Edelbrock, and a coordinator for the Peer Resource Program. He enjoys climbing, paddling, playing guitar, brewing, and has been known to pick a banjo from time to time. As the CSB Sustainability Fellow, Alex will focus on carbon reduction and developing leadership programming for students, faculty, and staff designed to strengthen our focus on living sustainably day-to-day.

STUDENT EMPLOYEES

Student Employees 

Madi Sundlof is currently a junior majoring in environmental studies with a biology minor. This year she will be helping the Sustainability Office with the Eco-Reps program and assisting in a variety of other projects. She enjoys running, exploring, and Nutella. After visiting 3 countries in Africa and spending 2 months farming in Lesotho, she is a soil lover and has a passion for traveling.

Student Employees

Nick Bradley is a Senior Environmental Studies major and Economics minor. This is his second year in the office and is now the Sustainability Program Coordinator. For the past two years, he has been working to determine the feasibility of renovating an on campus house to become net-zero, conducting a tree inventory of all on campus trees and updating the . CSB Greenhouse Gas Inventory. Nick is a member of the SJU Eco-Houses and a member of the Peer Resource Program. He hopes to land a job with an environmental non-profit or environmental advocacy center at the end of this school year.

Student Employees

Alyssa Gustafson is currently a junior studying Communication at Saint Ben's. She grew up in the little town of New London Spicer, but is now itching to get down to the Metro area within the next couple years. In the office Alyssa works as our Communications and Marketing Coordinator, managing our signage, social media presence, and additional marketing tools to engage students with the mission and programs of the Office of Sustainability. When not working, Alyssa she flourishes as a popcorn eater, sale shopper, and planner of unrealistic vacations.

INTERNS

Student Interns

Tyler Thompson is an Environmental Studies major and Economics minor. He grew up in the southwest suburbs of the Twin Cities and enjoys camping, canoeing, biking and water skiing. This past summer Tyler traveled to Sweden, Norway and Denmark where he was able to compare the environmental sustainability of the region to the United States. Tyler is a member of the CSB/SJU Nordic Ski team, Peer Resource Program, and works at the Outdoor Leadership Center as their events coordinator. Currently, Tyler is continuing to develop the Full Circle Greenhouse on campus, updating the campus greenhouse gas inventory, and improving the campus sustainability map.

Student Interns

Haleigh Linn is a senior Environmental Studies and Hispanic Studies double major. As an intern at the Office of Sustainability, her current projects include assisting with the Catholic response to Obama's climate change forum, analyzing data for the Real Food Challenge inventory, helping coordinate events for the Week of Sustainability, and working on the Freshman and Senior surveys! Outside of the office, she is an Operations Leader for Community Kitchen, a First Year Mentor, an International Buddy, a member of the crew team, and a Hispanic Studies tutor. She enjoys camping, canoeing, pottery, snowboarding, yoga, and cooking.
