Faith and Reason: Developing a Formed Conscience

Conscience has been invoked in many American debates recently, and yet, it can be misunderstood.  How is one's conscience different from one's opinion?  Why does the conscience need developing, when the Magisterium teaches Catholics right from wrong? How can the Church say always follow your conscience, yet warn against one that is wrongly formed?  We will discuss these and other related questions, while examining the multi-faceted process of forming one's conscience rooted in the Catholic belief.

Kathy Lilla Cox is Assistant Professor of Theology at Saint John's School of Theology·Seminary and in the undergraduate Department of Theology at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University. She earned her B.S. in biology from the University of Detroit and taught high school for a number of years. She earned her M.A. in theology and her doctorate from Fordham University in 1999 and 2007. She teaches courses in both systematic and moral theology.

A typical Theology Day consists of registration and refreshments, followed by a period of conversation/presentation/lecture. The conversation then continues as participants are given a chance to continue their discussions with one another. Morning presentations are followed by a complimentary lunch for all participants, and most evening sessions also include a meal.

There is no fee for Theology Day, but registration is required.  Free-will offerings and gifts to support the mission of the School of Theology·Seminary are gratefully accepted.
