Celtic Monasticism Study Tour
Early Irish Monasticism exercises a fascination for many modern people, believers and unbelievers alike. This course explores key aspects of the Irish monastic tradition between the fifth and the thirteenth centuries. Starting with the belief systems of the ancient Celts, it shows how these interacted with Christianity to produce a tradition that was both distinct from and part of the Western Monastic Tradition.
It examines the liturgy, music, art and architecture of the early Irish church and will feature a number of field trips to sites of monastic and historic interest. It concludes with an assessment of the impact of the religious reforms of the twelfth century on the monastic life of the medieval Irish Church. The course is taught by members of the monastic community at Glenstal Abbey and participants are welcome to participate in the life and worship of the community during their stay. Colman O Clabaigh OSB is a monk of Glenstal Abbey in Ireland and a medieval historian specializing in the history of Western Monasticism in the late Middle Ages. His publications include The Franciscans in Ireland 1400-1534 (Dublin, 2002) and The Friars in Ireland 1224-1540 (Dublin, 2010). He is the editor (with Martin Browne OSB) of The Irish Benedictines: a history (Dublin, 2005) and (with Rachel Moss and Salvador Ryan) of Art and Devotion in late medieval Ireland (Dublin, 2006).
Fees in Ireland come to $700. This price includes room and board for 6 nights plus all bus transportation. Participants are responsible for organizing their own roundtrip air transportation between the US and Shannon, Ireland.
