Student FAQs

If you don't see your question answered below, please feel free to call us at 800.635.7303.

What is the history of this program?
The Take a Johnnie to Lunch program is in its third year, and was launched as a way to provide students one more opportunity to explore the world they'll enter after graduating from Saint John's.

I just signed up.  Will I be matched up with an alumnus for sure?
The Alumni Office and Alumni Association will make every effort to recruit alumni in a diverse array of fields. If you are unable to find someone in your particular field of interest, you will be encouraged to let us know so we can further help you find a match.

Is this a long-term commitment?
No.  Your commitment is simply to meet with a Johnnie alumnus for a one-time meeting (or a meeting over Skype if you're unable to meet in person).  However, if the two of you would like to continue to meet, you are always welcome to do so.

Is this program open to students of all class years?
The program is open to all SJU students of all class years.

Will I need to drive off campus meet the alumnus?
It depends.

We're asking alumni to indicate whether they're able to drive to meet you or not. If you're unable to drive to meet an alumnus but would still like to meet in person, we'd recommend selecting an alumnus who has indicated that he can drive to campus. If both you and the alumnus are able to drive to meet each other, the decision about where to meet is totally up to you.

Am I the one who should make the first contact?
If you select an alumnus, we expect that you will make your first contact with your alumnus within two weeks of receiving his contact information.

Do participating alumni work at companies that are currently offering jobs/internships?
Not necessarily.  The main goal of the program is to offer students the opportunity to gain insight into a particular career/industry.  That doesn't mean that some alumni won't have positions available; it just means that job/internship placement is not the key goal of this program.

Will I meet my alumnus with other students?
In ordinary circumstances, no. The goal is for one student to meet with one alumnus.

Are CSB students/alumnae participating?

No. The CSB Alumnae Office has programming designed to specifically serve the career networking needs of CSB students.

Who buys lunch?
Due to the fact that college students are often a bit cash-strapped, we are kindly asking our alumni to pick up the tab for lunch.

What kind of preparation will students receive ahead of time?
If you are matched with an alumnus, you will receive an email with his contact details and be expected to make your initial contact with him within two weeks.

At that time, we'll also provide details about what to wear, suggested topics for conversation, etc.
