Carmen Morrison

Major: Peace Studies/Spanish

Carmen has studied abroad in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, and has participated in a service trip to Peru.  Her experiences at Saint Ben's complement her interests.  About her interests, Carmen explains, "I am interested in working with Spanish-speaking Latino communities with regards to sustainable development issues.  I am also very interested in economic and social justice issues as well as environmental concerns."  Carmen plans to pursue these interests after she graduates by volunteering for a year in Central or South America.  After that, she hopes to work for a nonprofit organization that deals with sustainable development issues.       

Carmen was immediately attracted to the Peace Studies major.  She states, "I became a Peace Studies major about three weeks into the intro class because I was fascinated and intrigued by philosophies and movements of peace and social change.  I was also attracted to the flexibility and ability to incorporate other disciplines into the major.  This decision has definitely allowed me to find my true interests . . . "

Carmen's advice for future Peace Studies majors:  "Take as much of a variety of classes as you can, get involved with anything and everything that catches your eye, and make as many connections with other students, profs, and staff as possible.
