Wildland Firefighter Training
Ever thought about being a forest fire fighter or adding the qualification to your resume?
College students and others interested in being trained as Wildland Fire Fighters can take a course this spring offered by The Nature Conservancy with assistance from MN DNR, and Saint John's Outdoor University. Upon completion, you will be qualified at the base level for wildland firefighting work anywhere in the USA. (Some tips on job hunting are also attached.)
TO BECOME CERTIFIED YOU MUST:
- Complete the 40-hour online training courses on your own schedule (keep in mind you must complete these BEFORE the field session).
- Contact Tim Notch (see contact info in Course Instructions document) to sign up for the 8 hour field session on April 1, 2013 at Camp Ripley, MN. (Registration deadline is March 26, 2013)
- REMEMBER to print off your course certificates and bring them to the field day.
Below are instructions for beginning the online courses. Included is a "Tips" sheet for assistance in navigating the online coursework. If you haven't already started the online coursework, please consider getting started soon as it will take close to 40 hours to complete. Both the online course and field day are free for CSB/SJU students. Saint John's Outdoor University also has free copies of the Incidient Response Pocket Guide (IPRG), which students can pick up at our office (New Science 104). If you plan to attend the field session on April 1, remember to sign up with Tim Notch by March 26. If you do not register, you will not be able to complete the course.
