Meg Deignan

Meg is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Cork, Ireland

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I wanted to study abroad because I wanted to experience a completely new culture and really branch out to new communities and experiences. I decided to go to Cork because it is a very independent program and it provides ample opportunity to really get to know the Irish people.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

I sang with the Choral Society at UCC where I met a large group of Irish students as well as a few from other countries as well as the United states. Not only did we sing songs of Irish heritage and language (which I loved) but I also because close friends with students from all over the world through the choir.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Studying abroad is an experience I will never forget. It provided me a place to explore different ways of life, even in a seemingly similar country such as Ireland. I learned to adapt to my surrounds and through my travel while abroad, came to trust my instincts and take care of myself even in countries where I knew no one and didn't speak the language.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Studying abroad makes you look at the world and yourself in a different light. You are placed into a situation that you've never experienced before and you have to learn to live within that culture. You compare your life at home to the life you live abroad and hopefully come to appreciate what you have at home but also learn so many new things and have experiences that will stay with you forever.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

DO IT! Whether you're thinking of going abroad for a semester or a week, going to a new place and living in a different atmosphere will make you see the world in a new light. You'll meet so many people you'd never encounter otherwise, and make the most incredible memories with them.
