Kelly Stephens is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Galway
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I wanted to find worldly view for myself. I found myself only thinking about school, or Minnesota now I think more globally and am interested in events around the world, especially in Ireland! I choose Ireland because it has been a dream of mine to go to Ireland from when I was young. I wanted to have the tradition Irish experience living in a cottage with green grass and the ocean nearby!
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
As a group we got to experience live Irish music and dancing by going to Trad on the Prom. This event was 3 hours full of wonderful singers and dancers known around the world! This was when I realized how deep the Irish tradition was with its roots. It was one of many wonderful nights and live Irish music will always be one of those things I miss about Ireland.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I never could have imagined how much this trip would change my life. Ireland is packed full of some of the nicest people you will ever meet, the landscape is beautiful and the things you will experience are incomparable.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
I became more independent than I thought was possible not to mention I became more aware of myself and my surroundings. I appreciate the things we have here in Minnesota, including my school, family, and friends. Not only did I get to come home to my old friends but I found 27 new best friends that went to Ireland with me.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Do it, it may be one of the scariest things but you get used to it. Life starts to become normal while abroad and then one day you stop and take a look around and all you can say is, "Wow, I'm actually here".
