Aaron Menzel is an Ambassador who studied abroad in London
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
It fit well with my major. I have always been interested with British life and culture, plus I have had several friends who had excellent experiences on this trip.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
I was fortunate enough to get tickets for four different football/soccer games. In my opinion, these matches truly showed what a cultural melting pot England tends to be. With both players and fans from around the world, it was amazing just to sit back and witness the diverse languages/styles of dress inside one stadium.
Describe your overall study abroad experience
Amazing! I only wish that I could do this all over again. The 25 students all fit together perfectly, we lived in a great part of town and I was able to experience several other countries during my stay in England.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
Along with taking some excellent courses that I would not have been able to take at CSB/SJU (Theatre in the West End, British Life and Culture, Islam and the West with a trip to Turkey) I gained knowledge in regards to living in the outside world. Shopping each day for groceries, balancing a small budget, getting to class that could be over a mile away on time, balancing travel and rest--all of these elements helped me to become both a better student as well as a better individual. Plus, when you can buy a ticket to another country for the equivalent of 20 US dollars, I don't know why you wouldn't want to study abroad.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad
Do not let a lack of spending money be the deciding factor in your choice to study abroad. Personally, I did not bring much money with me and the most rewarding experiences on these trips are usually free.
