The Saint John’s University football team won’t have to go far to start the NCAA Division III football playoffs.

The Johnnies received the No. 1 seed in the West Region and will host Coe College of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the first round of the playoffs at noon Saturday, Nov. 21 at Clemens Stadium.

Saint John’s could play three games at Clemens Stadium through the regional bracket, upon advancement. Other potential home playoff dates would be Nov. 28 and Dec. 5.

The Johnnies received an automatic berth into the playoffs by capturing the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title for the 22nd time outright and 31st time overall with an 8-0 record. Saint John’s, which is currently ranked No. 4 in the D3football.com poll, finished 10-0 overall.

The Kohawks are 9-1 overall, and finished second in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference behind Central (Iowa). It received a Pool C berth into the playoffs, and is ranked No. 22 in the D3football.com poll.

Saint John’s is making its 24th postseason appearance, where it has posted a 39-18 record. The Johnnies, who won Division III national titles in 2003 and 1976 and NAIA national titles in 1965 and 1963, have reached the playoffs in 11 of the past 12 seasons.

The Johnnies are 18-4 all-time in the first round of the NCAA or NAIA playoffs, including two first-round victories over Coe in 1991 and 1993. The Johnnies also defeated the Kohawks in the second round of the playoffs in 2002.

Should Saint John’s defeat Coe, it would host either MIAC rival St. Thomas (9-1) or Monmouth (10-0) in the regional semifinals. The lower half of the regional bracket has Mary Hardin Baylor (9-1) playing at Central (10-0), and Cal Lutheran (8-1) playing at Linfield (10-0).
