Patti LuPone

Patti LuPone

The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University's Fine Arts Series presents Patti LuPone at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 in the Escher Auditorium, Benedicta Arts Center of the College of Saint Benedict.

LuPone will perform her new, critically-acclaimed "Far Away Places," a cabaret program in which musical worlds, eras and styles collide in a powerful evening that weaves together Broadway classics, 30's and 40's cabaret tunes and contemporary pop songs.

The San Francisco Chronicle has called LuPone "the American Musical Theater's greatest living star," and her biography reads like a greatest hits of Broadway performances. In 2008, LuPone swept the theater awards, winning the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Actress in a Musical and the Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance for her performance as Rose in the critically-acclaimed Broadway production of "Gypsy."

After completing her training in 1972 with the first class of the Drama Division of New York's Juilliard School, she began her career as a founding member of John Houseman's The Acting Company playing a variety of leading roles, both on and off-Broadway and on tour throughout the United States.  Her subsequent roles include some of the most popular musicals of all time, including starring roles in "Evita" and "Sweeney Todd."

A fixture on New York stages, LuPone has also starred in numerous productions in London, Chicago and Los Angeles, as well on television and film.
