Reading by author-in-residence Geoff Dyer set for Nov. 19 at CSB

Author Geoff Dyer will read from his essay collection "Otherwise Known as the Human Condition" at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19 in room 204BC, Gorecki Dining and Conference Center, College of Saint Benedict, St. Joseph, Minn.

Dyer was born and educated in England. He attended the local grammar school and went to Corpus Christi College in Oxford. He has written four novels, two essay collections and six non-fiction books.

His first non-fiction book, "But Beautiful," gained international attention. Since then, his essays and non-fiction books have received numerous recognitions and awards, including the National Book Critic's Circle Award for Criticism for his essay collection entitled "Otherwise Known as the Human Condition." This essay collection was published by Graywolf Press, a collaborative partner of CSB.

In 2005, Dyer was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Library and received the GQ Writer of the Year award in 2009.

Dyer's most recent non-fiction book, "Zona," was inspired by his reaction to Andrei  Tarkovski's film "Stalker" which he describes as a "book about a film about a journey to a room." A screening of the film "Stalker" will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18 in the Colman Black Box Theater, Benedicta Arts Center of the College of Saint Benedict.

Dyer will be in residence Nov. 18-20 at CSB.  He will lecture classes and meet with students.
