Men's Center hosts first international conference for campus-based men's gender equality and anti-v
October 25, 2009
The first international conference for campus-based men’s gender equality and anti-violence groups will be held Nov. 6-7 at Saint John’s University, Collegeville. The conference is sponsored by the Center for Men’s Leadership and Service at SJU.
Several pioneers and leading researchers in the field of men’s studies are among the featured presenters at the conference. They include Michael Kimmel, author of Manhood in America: A Cultural History, Guyland and many other texts used in men’s studies classes; Harry Brod, professor of philosophy and humanities at the University of Northern Iowa, one of the founders of men’s studies and author of the publication, White Men Challenging Racism: 35 Personal Stories; and Michael Kaufman, one of the founders of the White Ribbon Campaign, an effort by men around the world to end violence against women.
“This conference is the first time that members of such groups will gather in one place for two-plus days of organizing together,” Kimmel said. “Together, we will hear about other programs from around the world, share ideas about programs, recruiting and strategies for reengaging campus-based men in these struggles.
“We hope that this conference will be both energizing and inspiring to all of us who are committed to ending men’s violence and gender inequality,” Kimmel added.
A number of speakers and sessions will be featured throughout the conference. There are opening plenary sessions from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. each day. Concurrent sessions will be held at 10:45 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Nov. 6, and 10:45 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Nov. 7. There is also a pre-conference event Nov. 5. The sessions will be held in the Peter Engel Science Center at SJU, with the main events in Pellegrene Auditorium. For a complete schedule of conference events, please see the conference flyer.
“We are pleased with the two plenary panels of feminist and men’s studies experts as well as the number of men’s groups from around the world who will be attending and participating,” said Gar Kellom, executive director of the Center for Men’s Leadership and Service. “It will also be a great opportunity for our own students who are attending a high quality international conference right on campus.”
Registration is $10 for College of Saint Benedict, Saint John’s University and other students, and $75 for all others. Registration is being accepted through Nov. 6. Credit card payment is available through the online registration form.

This is the seventh annual conference sponsored by the Center for Men’s Leadership and Service. The Men’s Center also runs volunteer programs in local schools, international service and study trips to Trinidad/Tobago and India/Nepal. In addition, several research projects and two books are in the works as part of a Lilly Endowment Inc. grant the center received to increase the number of college men doing theological vocational discernment and working for the common good.
