Institute for Sacred Music

Our Mission

The purpose of the Institute for Sacred Music at Saint John's is to preserve the heritage of sacred music and foster its further development for use in liturgy and concert, building on our Catholic and Benedictine musical traditions in an ecumenical spirit.

The Institute meets its mission by:
  • Offering educational opportunities to students and graduate scholars, alumni and friends
  • Cultivating Gregorian chant and the Church's heritage of organ and choral music
  • Serving as a sacred music resource for various church traditions
  • Inviting the participation of guest faculty and artists from various religious traditions
  • Commissioning new works of sacred music
  • Collaborating with internal constituents (e.g. the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, The Saint John's Bible, The Liturgical Press, Fine Arts Programming) and by providing outreach to external musical organizations
