Listen to Professor Mary Stenson talk about the highlights of the Exercise Science and Sport Studies department in this brief video introduction.
Exercise and physical activity are a cornerstone of healthy living. The Exercise Science and Sport Studies (ESSS) department is interdisciplinary by design, combining the science of human movement and exercise with social science and practical experience. At CSB/SJU, ESSS students extensively study the physiology of exercise, anatomy, the biomechanics of movement, and the practical and theoretical aspects of sport.
The ESSS minor appeals to students interested in a variety of health professions, graduate study in exercise physiology, physical therapy, cardiac and respiratory rehab, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, and coaching. ESSS students take advantage of our Exercise Science lab by incorporating hands-on experiences and research into ESSS courses. The ESSS faculty are passionate about their fields of study and committed to helping their students become competent and competitive health and exercise professionals.
ESSS exchange program with Coventry University in London
The ESSS department coordinates an exchange program with Coventry University located in central United Kingdom. The main purpose behind this semester long program is to connect students with an interest in Sports or Event Management with an international experience. While our students will be going to the United Kingdom in the spring of 2014, CSB/SJU will be welcoming the first 6 students from Coventry University this fall. All of the Coventry students are Sports or Event Management majors entering their second year of college. While here for the semester, the students will be fully integrated into our campus by living on campus and taking a full load of classes. In addition to the coursework, the students will participate in an internship to get pre-professional experience in the field of sport or event management. This experience will allow students to apply classroom theories into real world applications.
