Creative Writing Concentration Requirements (44 credits)
Our Concentration in Creative Writing offers students a combined degree in English and Creative Writing. Featuring craft talks and workshops with local, national, and international writers through our Literary Arts Institute, our campuses provide an inspiring location for writing and exploration with faculty and students from around the world.
Exploration is integral to good writing, and the best writers are avid and rigorous readers. Our major therefore places writing practice within the study of literature and the literary arts, encouraging artistic inquiry through courses in literature, film, theory, and cultural studies. Our majors deepen their understanding of the value and importance of creative writing through service and internship opportunities. Our Presidential Award-winning Experiential Learning course trains students to bring creative writing into area elementary schools.
Our new Medical Humanities course, "Clinical Encounters," takes pre-health students from the classroom to the clinic--giving them vital clinical experiences and helping our community re-think the reach of creative writing.

I chose English because I love to read and write, but this
major has given me even more than an opportunity to do what I love. In this major, you
practice your written and oral communication skills during every class period. You develop the confidence to form your own opinions and learn how to back them with solid evidence. I chose the
Creative Writing Concentration
because even when you're
not writing fiction, using compelling language and generating creative ideas are powerful skills.
