CSB/SJU Parking Restrictions –
It is the responsibility of every vehicle operator to read and understand these rules and regulations. CSB Security and SJU Life Safety Services are responsible for managing all parking, traffic, and safety issues regarding the use of vehicles on each campus. It is important to be aware that the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University have a limited number of parking spaces available on campus. For that reason, they must carefully facilitate parking in order to accommodate the high demand for parking areas on campus. In order to promote orderly parking for all students, employees, monastery and guests, the following guidelines must be adhered to:

  • All vehicles parking on either campus must be registered with CSB Security or SJU Life Safety Services.
  • Parking for students commuting by private vehicle is limited. Please use the CSB/SJU Link to travel between campuses.
  • Parking on campus is a privilege, not a right.
  • Students are responsible for ensuring that their guests register and park their vehicles in the correct areas.
  • Guests are welcome to park upon registering their vehicle with CSB Security or SJU Life Safety Services.
  • All student and employee vehicles must have a parking sticker permanently affixed to the driver’s side back seat window. Cellophane, laminate, scotch tape or other temporary adhesives may not be used to attach the permit.
  • Counterfeiting, altering, transferring or defacing a parking permit or providing false information upon registration of the vehicle is subject to fines or loss of privilege to operate a vehicle on either campus.
  • Students whose parents are employed by CSB/SJU, or otherwise have access to a vehicle with an employee parking permit, are not authorized to park that vehicle in areas reserved for employee parking. Misuse of permits in this manner could result in fines for the vehicle operator and the employee’s loss of parking privileges on either campus.
  • All vehicles are limited to parking in designated spots and must be parked between two solid lines.  It is impossible to post NO PARKING signs in every campus location that is not intended for parking.  If a space is not marked as a parking space, it should be considered a NO PARKING space.
  • Parking is never allowed in fire lanes, bus lanes, roadways, or in areas marked by yellow curb or “No Parking Anytime” signs. All violators may be towed at the owner’s expense.
  • Notices will be posted as to when and where to move vehicles for lot maintenance/snow removal. Vehicles must be removed for lot maintenance and may be towed at the owners’ expense if not removed. Vehicles must be returned to their assigned lots once lot maintenance is completed.
  • Permission for entering barricaded areas for loading and unloading must be obtained from CSB Security or SJU Life Safety prior to entry.
  • In the event of a license plate change, ownership of a new vehicle, or the use of a loaner/temporary vehicle on either campus, CSB Security or SJU Life Safety Services must be notified.
  • Non-vehicular motorized traffic, such as golf-carts or motorized scooters, are only allowed under special circumstances authorized by CSB Security or SJU Life Safety Services for reasons such as handicapped access or personal medical needs. Departments with non-vehicular motorized needs must register their request with CSB Security or SJU Life Safety Services. Department personnel engaged in the use of motorized carts need to participate in a safety program.
  • Bicycle riders must obey all traffic laws. Bicycles must be secured in the bike racks provided. All others will be confiscated.
  • All vehicle users who disregard policies are subject to fines, towing or loss of parking privileges.
  • Employee lots, guest lots, fire lanes, bus lanes, no parking zones, posted zones, and handicapped restrictions are enforced 24-hours-a-day.
  • There is no student or employee parking allowed in any Monastery area. These areas are reserved 24 hours a day for specific vehicles and Monastery events.
  • Restrictions on unregistered overnight guest parking are always enforced. Vehicles remaining are subject to towing at owners’ expense.
  • Motorcycle parking is allowed when weather permits in designated areas, April 1-Nov. 1.
  • Students from CSB and SJU who drive or park vehicles on either campus are subject to vehicle and or parking fines and violations of both campuses.

Speed Limits – CSB/SJU
Campus speed limits are set to provide for the safe movement of persons and vehicles on each campus. Please respect the posted limits.

CSB Speed Limit — 15 mph on roadways and 10 mph in parking lots
SJU Speed Limit — 20 mph on roadways and 10 mph in parking lots

Those whose driving or disregard of parking regulations threatens the safety of the campus, demonstrate an unwillingness to park responsibly, or recieve a third violation are required to meet with the traffic coordinator and may have their permit and/or parking privileges on either campus revoked.  Upon the 7th ticket, your driving privileges will be revoked until a review takes place. The registered owner of the vehicle will be held accountable when the driver cannot be identified. Vehicles will be wheel locked or towed away at owner’s expense if there is a continued disregard of policy.  Vehicles blocking fire lanes or parking in a posted tow away zone are subject to tow at owner’s expense. CSB Security issues parking tickets directly on vehicles. SJU Life Safety Services mails tickets to violators daily through campus mail (no ticket put on vehicle).

Emergency Response Violations – CSB/SJU
Individuals and vehicles that impede the emergency response of medical, fire, Security and Life Safety personnel or vehicles are subject to judicial sanctions, towing of vehicles, and may have their permit or driving privileges on the CSB/SJU campuses revoked. These sanctions are not open to appeals as they impact the health and wellness of our communities. Actions that fall into this category would include but are not limited to:

  • Interfering with the actions of emergency responding personnel
  • Parking in fire lanes or blocking access to a building during an emergency
  • Reckless endangerment of campus life and property

Appeals – CSB/SJU
Those believing they have received a citation in error or have extraordinary circumstances may appeal the violation by completing the appeals form located at either the CSB Security or SJU Life Safety Web sites (Located here, for CSB or here for SJU). Appeals must be submitted within ten business days of the violation date to the campus where the ticket was issued. Appeals made after the tenth day will not be accepted unless approved by the parking coordinator.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If I have a visitor on campus, what should I do?
Contact the CSB Security Department at #5000. Tell them that you have a guest and for how long the guest will be staying on campus. The officer can meet with you and issue your guest a "Short-Term" parking permit. If you anticipate the arrival of a guest, wait until the guest arrives to contact the officer so that the information on the guest permit is correct. Guests will be instructed to park in lot 5.

I was only parked there for a few minutes, why did I get a ticket?
Campus parking is clearly marked with signs. The Department of Security is also bound by State and Federal rules and regulations regarding parking. Fire lanes are designated by the State Fire Marshal and compliance to those regulations is a State Law. Should a State Fire Marshal come to campus and note a failure to comply, the institution can be fined thousands of dollars until compliance is achieved. Specific reasons exist for the development of a successful parking program on our campus. We also ask that you pay particular attention to Monastery parking and respect their parking lots, guest spaces and the circle in front of the gathering place. They are clearly identified by signage. We must work together cooperatively to honor and respect each other's space. If you have questions, comments or suggestions we invite you to e-mail them to the CSB Department of Security.

How do I get a permit?
Contact the CSB Security Department at #5000 to recieve assistance. Or, go to the Security office located in Mary Commons.

My friend used my car and they parked it in the wrong place and I got a ticket. What can I do about this?
Your vehicle is registered in your name and is therefore your responsibility. You are responsible for any tickets accumulated on your vehicle. If your friend is going to use your car, make sure that they know where it is supposed to be parked. Since they used your car, you may feel that they should be responsible to reimburse you for the ticket. However, the fine received from a parking violation will be billed to the Student Account of the individual who registered the vehicle.

I had night class at SJU and when I came home there was nowhere in my lot to park, what should I do?
Contact the CSB Security Department at 5000.  If there is a special event at the Haehn Campus Center and/or the Benedicta Arts Center, we may have had to direct visitors to available parking. We can let you know when the event is scheduled to be over.  Until that time, we will direct you to park in an open area and we will provide an escort for you to your residence.  After the event it will be necessary for you to move your car to the proper lot.  We are a community that promotes public events and invites people from outside our community to join with us in activities.  Some of these people are parents or grandparents of current or future students or alumnus and alumna of SJU or CSB.  Because parking space on campus is limited, sometimes there is a need to temporarily displace you to accommodate those needs.  In all cases we are grateful that you are a cooperative member of our community.

I am parked in 15 minute parking in front of _________ and now my car won't start.  What should I do?
We can accommodate you for a short period of time in order to resolve your issue. If your car needs a jump start, contact Security at #5000 for assistance.

I am only going to be here the first semester and then I graduate.  Why do I have to purchase a parking permit for the entire year?
Some of it is bookkeeping issues and the computer's ability to keep track of who is coming and going throughout the year.  And sometimes things change and your student status may change unexpectedly.  We attempt to accommodate other students who place their name on a waiting list so that as others graduate, they can update their permit and get closer to their residence. As soon as you turn your permit back in to us, your account will be credited accordingly.

My parents are letting me use their car and I will only have it here for two weeks. Do I have to buy a whole year permit?
We understand that there will be times that you will only have a car on campus for a short time.   You can buy a temporary permit for a week at a time.  The cost is $5 for a one-week period.

I am a faculty member and I teach on both campuses.  When I come back and all the employee spaces are full where I generally park, what am I supposed to do?
Once spaces are taken in a particular lot it will be necessary for you to park in the overflow lot, which is lot 5 and located on the South end of campus between the Campus Center and the Benedicta Art Center.   Parking in handicap spaces, student spaces, along the curb or in the aisles is prohibited.  If you have large bundles or books, call Security from one of the blue lights phones and we will assist you.
