Job Title:  Student Director

 Department/Agency:  Sister Nancy Hynes Institute for Women's Leadership

 Length of Position: Academic Year, (4 credits per semester, for a total of 8 credits a year, with 10-12 hours of work/study compensation); Preferred that intern works over the summer; Potential to hold position for two years consecutively

 Function/Description of the Position:

 The primary role of the Student Director is to lead and manage the daily operations of the Institute for Women's Leadership in support of the mission of the College of Saint Benedict. The Student Director will supervise student employees who together will set goals, manage the programming and marketing sides of the Institute in compliance with our mission. The Student Director will ensure that tasks are completed at a professional level and act as the main line of communication between students and administration on behalf of the Institute. She will seek new and appropriate growth ventures for the Institute that will not only attract students but will also enhance the overall ethos and stature of the Institute.

  Necessary to this position is the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of constituents. The ideal candidate is a self-initiator needing minimal supervision and open to being mentored. Due to the support structure of the IWL, the director is responsible for reporting to the staff advisor regarding the budget, event coordination, and future direction of the Institute. Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills are required along with knowledge and background in gender studies.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interview, hire, train, supervise, discipline, and evaluate student employees
  • Schedule staff to cover the hours of operation
  • Be present during hours of service to monitor the operation, address staff concerns, as well as ensure quality and quantity of work produced by the staff
  • Schedule and conduct weekly staff meetings
  • Schedule and conduct monthly Advisory Board meetings to ensure connection of the Institute to current trends in gender issues/programming in the greater campus community
  • Develop and implement a fall and spring semester retreat/training session for all student staff prior to the beginning of classes
  • Complete selected readings and books to further knowledge deemed useful in success as the Student Director
  • Work closely with the GWST department to create gender programming on campus
  • Meet regularly with the IWL's advisor to discuss current projects, programs, and any developing problems and issues
  • Maintain and expand both the knowledge and the presence of the IWL within the campus community by actively generating and sharing ideas with campus partners
  • Maintain records/archives regarding programming
  • Assess events offered through the IWL each semester
  • Monitor and maintain records of expenditures and expenses
  • Research new ventures
  • Work collaboratively with the CSB Senate's Women's Issues Representative in planning Women's Month
  • Actively participate on committees and be involved with the administration of the institutions on topics pertaining to the IWL

  Minimum Qualifications to Perform the Duties of the Position:

  • Junior or Senior class standing
  • Background in gender studies and an interest in learning more about gender
  • Experience in leadership of people and projects
  • Excellent organization, time management, and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to take initiative and work with indirect supervision
  • Ability to teach and mentor others
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs and priorities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and departments regarding issues related to gender on campus and programming opportunities in the IWL
  • Remain unbiased and open to all ends of the spectrum
  • Attentive to detail and able to verify accuracy of information
  • Knowledge regarding the college, its facilities, organizations, and activities
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong willingness to learn
  • Valid passport
  • Willingness to travel abroad and act as a leader during travel experiences
