CPR/First Aid/AED Classes

These classes are for CSB/SJU students.  If CSB/SJU employees are interested, contact Marcia Mahlum [email protected] If the class doesn't fill with students, employees can be added to a class.  

Non-CSB/SJU students or employees, please contact the local Red Cross or American Heart Association Chapters for course offerings.  Websites are available below.

Many non-healthcare employers accept either certification level (Heartsaver or BLS).  Check with employer on their requirements before registering to verify which certification you need.
 

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

American Heart Association Heartsaver certification - for those who have never been certified before, or for those whose certifications have expired.  You will learn CPR, First Aid and how to use an AED in this course for adults, children and infants.  This is a 5-hour course.  Cost $45/person.  2 year certification.

American Heart Association Heartsaver Skill Challenge - for those who are currently certified and confident in their skills.  No instruction will be given.  You can come in, go through 2-3 scenarios and demonstrate skills/responses accordingly.  This is a pass/fail to become re-certified.  Failure to perform skills properly will mean that you would have to challenge again on another date or complete the refresher course.  Cost $15/person.  Contact Marcia Mahlum to set up a time and date.  2 year certification.

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for the professional rescuer - designed to teach healthcare professionals how to perform high-quality CPR/AED individually or as part of a team for adults, children and infants.  You will learn bag-mask techniques, rescue breathing and choking for adults, children and infants as well.  This is a 4-hour course.  Cost $45/person.  2-year certification.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Re-certification Course - for those who have a current or are in a grace period with their Red Cross Lifeguard certification. You will also receive Lifeguard/CPR/First aid/AED re-certification good for 2 years from the American Red Cross. This is a 12-hour course. Cost is $85/person. American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course - for those who are new to lifeguarding and need to complete the entire certification course, or for those who have let their certification lapse and need to retake the entire class.  You will also receive Lifeguard/CPR/First Aid/AED certification with your lifeguard certification good for 2 years from teh American Red Cross.  This is a 25-hour course.  Cost is $110/person. CLASSES SPRING SEMESTER 2017:

 American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for the professional rescuer
Spring 2017
The goal of the Basic Life Support (BLS) Course is to train participants to save lives of victims in cardiac arrest through high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).  The American Heart Association designed the BLS Course to teach healthcare professionals how to perform high-quality CPR individually or as part of a team.  BLS skills are applicable to any healthcare setting.  BLS students will learn rescue teachniques for adults, childre and infants.


Red Cross Lifeguard Certification 
Spring 2017
The Life-guarding course teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies in a pool environment. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries. Upon successful completion (passing skill tests and written tests), participants will receive the American Red Cross certificate Life-guarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, recognized as valid for two years. This is the certificate needed to seek employment as a lifeguard at most facilities utilizing Red Cross lifeguards.

  • This course is for those taking training for the first time or those whose certifications have expired. The only prerequisites are age and the pre-course swimming skills test.
  • This course is taught with all sessions being in person. Participants will partake in classroom work as well as pool skill sessions.
