Prehealth Professional Students

Pre-health profession students should consult the specific schools recommendations for number of years of chemistry required.

In general, if two years of chemistry are required for pre-health care students who are NOT chemistry or biochemistry majors, these students should take the following courses in the order given:

  •  4 credit courses: CHEM 125, 250, 251, and 255 .  Students must take CHEM 125, 250 and 251 in sequential order since their content is integrated.  Most students would take 255 after taking CHEM 251, although its only prerequisite is CHEM 125.
  • 0 or 1 credit labs:  CHEM 201, 202, 203, and 205

If only three semesters are suggested (such as for some Pre-Physician's Assistant programs), students should take

  •  4 credit courses: CHEM 125, 250, and 255.  It is important that these classes be taken in the order listed since the content of CHEM 125 and 250 are integrated and sequential.
  •  0 or 1 credit labs:  CHEM 201, 202, and  205.

Most students who are uncertain about a choice of science majors and/or  are considering a pre-health care field typically enroll in the following courses:

  • CHEM 125:  Introduction to Chemical Structure and Properties (4 credits)
  • CHEM 250: Reaction of Nucleophiles and Electrophiles I (4 credits)
  • CHEM 201: Purification and Separation, Lab 1 (0 or 1 credits)
  • CHEM 202: Purification and Chromatography, Lab 2 (0 or 1 credits)

This will keep the most options open for undecided but potential science majors (chemistry, biology, nutrition science, natural science, etc.) and most pre-health fields and allows the classes to be taken in the intended order.  We do offer each of these courses in both fall and spring semester so it is possible to take CHEM 125 in the Fall semester and 201 in the Spring semester, for example  Suggested courses are shown below.

Not all pre-health profession students need to start taking chemistry courses in the Fall semester of their first year.  It may even be to your advantage to start taking chemistry courses either in the Spring of your first year or in the Fall of your second year.  (As noted above we offer offset sections of our courses each semester).  Go to the following link for our recommendations on when to start.
