ESL Summer Camps

JAPAN:

Background

For close to 25 years, the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University has opened up its doors to middle and high-school aged students during the month of July. These students come from Okinawa, Japan to spend three weeks on our campuses. While they are here, the students study English and American Culture. They also explore the local area and visit museums and historical sites in the Twin Cities.

Many students who have participated in the ESL Summer Camps have enrolled at CSB/SJU as degree-seeking students after high school.

Homestay

These students spend one weekend each summer with a home stay family, which is one of the highlights of their experience in Minnesota. This year, we have two home stay weekends on July 12-14 and July 26-28. Generally, the students go out in pairs (greater comfort level), but I can accommodate families that prefer just one student.  Volunteer families pick-up the students on Friday afternoon and return them on Sunday at a time convenient to them.  We would be happy to meet in a central location in Minneapolis so that host families would not have to drive out to Collegeville. It is not expected that you make special plans for the weekend.  Some families do, but past students have enjoyed activities ranging from shopping and backyard cookouts to biking and accompanying families to a wedding.  In other words, families should feel free to do what they would ordinarily do on a summer weekend.

If you are interested in becoming a home stay family, please complete the form online. This is the link: https://www.csbsju.edu/forms/7YL0J0KFVZ.aspx

You will then be on our list and we will contact you a few weeks before the home stay weekend with additional information about the Japanese students.
