Vande Hei Reaches Orbit as First Johnnie Astronaut

Mark Vande Hei '89 blasted off in September for a half-year stay at the International Space Station. Vande Hei, who majored in physics and participated in ROTC at CSB/SJU, holds a Master's of Science degree in applied physics from Stanford University.

Two Nursing Cadets Among Top Three in the Nation

CSB/SJU senior nursing students Becca Dykhoff and Mary Esker were ranked in the top three Army ROTC nursing cadets in the nation. Rankings are based on a combination of factors, including grade point average, physical training scores and leadership abilities.

Top Two for Semester-long Study Abroad

The Institute of International Education (IIE) ranks CSB/SJU #2 among undergraduate schools for participation in semester-long study abroad. CSB/SJU have been ranked among the top six schools nationally in this category for more than 10 years.

Money Magazine ranks the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University among the Best 50 Colleges in the nation. Together, CSB/SJU are the top-ranked schools in Minnesota. Schools were evaluated on educational quality, affordability, and career success.

CSB/SJU Ranked by The Princeton Review

The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University were ranked as top institutions in the country by The Princeton Review in three different categories: #14 in "best college newspaper"; #15 in "most active student government"; and #18 in "best campus food."

Best Buy CFO

Corie Barry, the chief financial officer at Best Buy Company, credits the experiences she had at CSB/SJU for giving her the professional foundation she needed to succeed. While at CSB/SJU, Barry participated in the Honors Program, graduated with two business majors, and developed her communication and critical thinking skills through the liberal arts curriculum.

Not only is Saint John's University listed as the top school in Minnesota for finding a job after graduation, it ranked second nationally.

Student receives $50,000 grant from U.S. environmental agency

Sarah McLarnan, a senior environmental studies and biology major from Victoria, Minnesota, was awarded a Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Undergraduate Fellowship with a grant of $50,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Testing Devices at NASA

Kara Ehlert and Emily Dauk, both CSB graduates and math teachers, used a spaceflight and a trip to Mars to perk up their classrooms. The two teachers spent time at NASA's Johnson Space Center as part of a team that tested a student designed satellite launching experimental device. What a great way to bring real life experience into the classroom! 

Rachel Mullin

Rhodes Scholar

Rachel Mullin '14 was one of 32 Americans who received a 2016 Rhodes Scholarship. Mullin was the only recipient from a Minnesota college or university. The Rhodes Scholarship is widely considered to be the world's most prestigious academic award. Scholars receive full financial support to pursue a degree at the University of Oxford. Rachel credits much of her success to the mentorship she received from CSB/SJU professors.

Johnnie Named NCAA III Football Player of the Year

SJU Senior, Carter Hanson '17, was awarded the Gagliardi Trophy, which honors the top NCAA III football player and recognizes excellence in athletics, academics, and community service. Hanson played linebacker for the Johnnies while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.

CSB Graduate Named Minnesota Physician of the Year

Dr. Julie Mayers Benson '90 was named the 2017 Family Physician of the Year by the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians. She is a family physician with the Lakewood Health System in Staples, Minn. She credits her liberal arts education for preparing her for life.

Kiplinger's 100 Best Values in Liberal Arts Colleges

Kiplinger's ranks CSB/SJU among their 2017 100 Best Values in Liberal Arts Colleges based on their definition of value – a combination of academic quality and affordability.

Top 20 Catholic Colleges and Universities

Both CSB and SJU were named one of the top 20 best Catholic colleges and universities in the country by College Factual, a site that uses outcome-based data to guide students through the college selection process. CSB was ranked No. 8 and SJU No. 17. According to the story that ran in USA Today, CSB “has a solid reputation for developing students intellectually, spiritually and ethically."

With 22 students receiving Fulbright Scholarships in the last four years, CSB/SJU were ranked among the elite company of some of the best liberal arts colleges in the country. CSB/SJU faculty work diligently to mentor students for these opportunities.

CSB/SJU Open New Athletic Facilities

Both colleges are finishing up major athletic facilities projects. SJU's new facilities include a soccer field, baseball stadium, tennis courts, indoor golf simulation center, and a seasonally-domed multipurpose field. CSB built two softball fields, two soccer fields and intramural fields. An athletic center will house concession stands, locker rooms, a training room, and a press box.

CSB Operating Efficiency

CSB is Most Efficient Among National Liberal Arts School

The College of Saint Benedict is rated No. 1 among national liberal arts colleges for operating efficiency, according to an analysis by U.S. News and World Report. The ranking is based on operating efficiency, which U.S. News defined as a school’s per-student spending on education-focused activities divided by its overall score, which the magazine used to determine schools’ numerical ranks in the 2018 Best Colleges rankings.

United Nations Observer Status

CSB/SJU have been granted non-governmental observer status to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. CSB/SJU are among a select few liberal arts schools to receive observer status.

Top 100 U.S. News and World Report

CSB/SJU were once again both rated among the top 100 in national rankings of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report magazine.

Management Case Research Competition Champions

CSB/SJU placed first at the 2017 Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM) Case Research Competition in Orlando. CSB/SJU teams have won the competition four years in a row.
