Nicole Winters is an Ambassador who studied abroad in India.
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I wanted to study abroad as soon as my sophomore year started and my friends started discussing study abroad programs. I chose to study abroad in India because I wanted to be challenged by traditions and cultures that are drastically different from my own.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
I truly appreciated the service learning aspect of the India study abroad program. While volunteering with my NGO, I was able to help develop a sexual and reproductive health rights module that will be taught to rural women throughout India. The work that I was given made a lasting impression because I was able to visit rural villages throughout West Bengal to see how my work was impacting women.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I loved studying abroad in India! Visiting another country allows you to expand your liberal arts experience at CSBSJU and it is an opportunity that you will value for the rest of your life.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
A great benefit of studying abroad is that you immerse yourself in a culture that you may not have previously been familiar with. Studying abroad has made me realize that post-graduation, I would like to work with people of different ethnic backgrounds and travel throughout the world helping others.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Really research the different programs that are available and understand why studying abroad is important to you.
