Michael is an Ambassador who studied abroad in London
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I was able to do my internship while i was there. Also I am not proficient in any language so there is not a language barrier. I had also had friends with siblings who had gone on this trip and it came very highly recommended.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
My internship was in a company that was very multicultural. There were people from England, Poland, India, Sudan, Russia and Italy in this small company of hardly 20 people. It was interesting to see all of these cultures interacting in a professional environment.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
It was fantastic! I did not go with a lot of my good friends so I was able to create new friendships and meet new people. There was so much to do in a city like London so I was never bored. I was also abe to easily travel throughout Europe and I took full advantage of that.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
Like I said before I was not with any good friends so it was a great opportunity to discover who I am. Also the different class schedule and teaching styles gave me new perspectives into problem solving in the classroom. An obviously having an internship in a foreign company was an amazing experience and really broadened my horizons. We had a class with a London professor and he gave us a statistic that only about students who study abroad are in the top 10% of what employers are looking for. And within that 10% only 1% have internships abroad. It was a great way for me to be able to stand out on a resume.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Really look into the programs and do research to find the right one for you. Talk to people who have gone before. Also get your resume critiqued at least once and maybe even up to 3 times and do a practice interview. It not only helps but the people who are choosing the students to go see that and it shows you are serious about the application and really want to go.
